It was erected outside Saint Bavo Cathedral for the 1913 World Expo, which was held in Ghent, as a memorial to the Flemish painters Hubert and Jan Van Eyck. The cathedral contains probably their most famous work the altarpiece The Adoration of the Lamb, a very large early 15th century panel painting.
