On Sint-Michielsplein, Ghent, and by the bridge of the same name.
Its construction in two phases, on the site of several previous church buildings, began in 1440. By 1566 only two levels of the tower were completed. Then due to religious conflicts construction stopped and looting and some destruction took place. Reconstruction started in 1623 and continued for a further 40 years, except on the tower. It was planned to be the highest in Flanders at an enormous 440 feet tall, but because of delays and cost concerns the tower was never completed and in 1828 a flat roof was built over the unfinished 80 foot tower, on the right in this photo.
