St. Jacobs church in Ghent dates back to the 12th century when it was built in Romanesque style to replace an older wooden chapel. It was extended several times during the Middle Ages and different architectural styles can be seen today. The east tower was built in the 15th century in Gothic style, and the west tower is a remnant of the Romanesque style. Calvinists destroyed the interior during the 16th century and this was reconstructed in Baroque style.
