HIGH SALVINGTON WINDMILL

Near Worthing - West Sussex

A working post mill, dating from approximately 1750, that stands 320ft above sea level just north of Worthing.
The mill previously worked for almost 150 years until it was closed in 1897. It was then used as a tea room well into the 1950s. Worthing Borough Council bought the mill in 1959. It was restored in the 1960s, and more completely in 1976 as a result of damage sustained during a gale. During the hurricane of 1987 the mill had its first taste of new life. The ferocious wind turned the new sails for the first time, although the brake was on! It finally restarted working in 1991.
