CHURCHYARD GATE & WAR MEMORIAL

Sullington - West Sussex

St Mary's Church.
Across the lane is the separate, current graveyard. The inscription on the war memorial is as follows:

ERECTED IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THESE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 18 BY THOSE THEY DIED TO SAVE

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE BEFORE MEN

PRIVATE DAVID CRAMP EAST KENT REGT.
PRIVATE ERNEST KNOWLES R. SUSSEX REGT.
DRIVER EDGAR TOWSE R.F.A.
COMMANDER G.W.E. NAPER R.N. AND CREW OF SUBMARINE E.24.

The submarine was an E class mine layer built at Barrow in Furness. She was launched on 9th January 1916. On 21st March 1916 she sailed from Harwich on a mine laying mission but was posted as missing at sea just 3 days later, with both crew and submarine lost without trace.
