This building from Kent is a classic medieval hall-house and was probably built in the 15th century.
The jettied end and a side elevation both faced a road on its original site, so the building was an ideal candidate for the Museum's Market Square corner site. The timbers are painted red, as there was evidence that this was done when the house was originally built. Another unusual feature is that most of the original timbers are elm rather than oak. It was dismantled in 1965 and reconstructed in 1984 at Singleton.
