St. Martins’s Church, in the background, is dominated by its defence tower. After a defeat in a 1390 war the tower was integrated into the town’s fortifications and was converted into a defence tower. Today it is one of the best examples of religious defence architecture in the Rhine area. In the foreground is the Werner chapel constructed in 1300.
