HEYLES'EN WERTH ISLAND
This island is a curiosity of the Middle Rhine. It is named after Hans Heylesen who owned it from 1593. Vines are grow on the sandy loam and silt soil and the wines from the island's vines are not typical of the Rhine River and are described as fruity and full-bodied. The island, which is regularly flooded, can only be reached by rowing boat so it is a real challenge to produce its wine. The island is 150m wide, 680m long and totally flat. It is 80m above sea level.
