CHICHESTER GALLERY

Chichester is a cathedral city sandwiched between the South Downs and its harbour area on the South Coast, and is near the border with Hampshire. It has a long history, having played a significant part during the Roman invasion of A.D 43. Nearby at Fishbourne are the remains of a Roman palace, and the city streets have a cross-shaped layout formed by the Romans, radiating outwards from the medieval market cross. The walls of the city were built on their Roman foundations. During the Anglo-Saxon period it was the chief city of the kingdom of Sussex. The cathedral was founded in the 11th century and contains a shrine to Saint Richard of Chichester. The city holds an annual three-week arts and music festival and is home to the prestigious Chichester Festival Theatre.
