Through the Glass of Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8

I got this lens in early year 2007. It is about 1.5 years now. To my opinion, it is a decent lens for me to shoot various subjects. It is not a perfect lens, as i believe such lens are hard to find, but when i hold it in my hand, i know this glass is pro-grade lens.
This telephoto zoom also works perfectly well in my Nikon D300. The focusing speed and accuracy are very good for the type of subject i shoot.

Hi guys, im new in this thing.just wanna ask an advice if it's fair to buy it for $ 1,050 for a new one or it's already a good deal for that price? just bought a d200 and hoping that it will work great on it, since all the reviews on this lens are good. thanks

Dear Folks , Is there anyone here that have used this Nikkor 80-200 F2,8 AF ED for sports or fast moving objects with good results? i mean for soccer,racingcars,football,tennis,and alike? have you any sample pics ? is this old 80-200 AFD useable for sports compared to the 70-200? which is an AFS lens? i hope that you can help me? thanks PJ Fish.

Exellent glass, I have the pull-push version, is the same optic, strong, clear, not expensive, used in Peru cost 300 USD, visit my gallery FIesta del nino, all whit this lens. Thanks.

Dear Alex, Im so glad to hear from you that you are happy with the famed Nikkor 80-200 f 2,8 AFD,it seems taht this lens is having a world wide renaissance at the moment especially for the Nikon D3 and D700 cameras coming up now-so in short,enjoy this pearl before Nikon japan decide to stop production and put nano on it and afs and so on, and suddenly nikon might charge 2500 USD for almost the same lens..(/.. Hi PJ Fish, I fully agree with you that this is lens is amazing, I have compared it with my fren's 18-200mm VR Nikkor (at 200mm) but the depth of field is not enough for me. For this lens, the subject really stand out because of the shallow depth of field. When i carry this lens around, really feel like a pro, yet the size and length is not too long and scary compared with other telezoom. In China, photo fans called it "The little metal cannon", that is the reputation. This lens is always my choice when there is serious outing. Even when short outing, i can see things differently with this telezoom; normal subject will turn unique. I owned this lens almost 2 years now, and still the proud owner of it. Regarding the famed Nikon 80-200 F2,8 AFD i think that it is the best lens for full frame cameras on the market right now and i have tested it out now with satisfaction and use it daily with the Nikon D3 body-great combo.! You Do not need VR in most cases,just turn up the iso or use a pod. Thanks for your kind help and information.

i use this lens to take whitewater rafting photos. i know it does not have an AFS motor but on a D1h or D2h it flies!!! this first D version can be had in great shape for 500 to 650 dollars , much better quality than any variable apeture lens or 3rd party junk!!!!!!

Hi PJ Fish, I never use the 70-200 VR or the 80-200 AFS, but i heard that the 80-200 AFS has similar optical performance with the 80-200 AFD. You can check the website below for detail test. This is what I normally do before buying new lens: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

Hi Kelly, I have send you a separate email for your question. Generally i found the bokeh of this lens is one of the strong point; the out of focus area really make the subject stand out. However, i suspect that if the out of focus area cannot be properly recorded in the film or digital sensor in the digital camera, it can become grain. Do you mean you see grain in the out of focus area? Another thing to avoid when using this lens is: the image quality might drop when shoot at 200mm f2.8 at shortest focusing distance. At first i thought i am bad luck to get this sample, but after check with the Nikonian's website, this is true. So pls. accept the fact that there is no perfect lens.

I just bought the 80-200 f2.8. So far I am very happy. beautiful colour and contrast to this lens. I didn't think I needed to spend $2000 on the VR and I'm happy I didn't. I love this lens.

Hi Ken, I have send you a separate email for my opinion. I believe the 70-300mm ED has many strong points too, especially it is easier to carry around with its weight. Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 has its own weakness too, like its macro is not very attractive (about 1:5), but i can live with that. I summary, i love this lens for its optical performance and very reasonable auto focus speed. Very good for portraiture, street photography and some sports.

This looks like such a nice lens to play with, esp for candid portraits and at F 2.8, that's awesome! I only have the Canon 70-300 IS, not nearly as fun as yours.
