Famagusta from the air

Aerial images of parts of Famagusta taken (I guess) in 2003-2004.
Famagusta, for those that are not familiar with the history of our country, has been an uninhabited 'ghost town' since 14th August 1974, when the inhabitants of Famagusta were forced out of their homes by the Turkish troops that invaded the island a month earlier on the 20th July 1974. Just over a third of the island is still under Turkish occupation and almost 200,000 Greek Cypriots are still not allowed to return to their homes.

Sehr sch�ne Fotos. Alles hochinteressant. War einmal am Zaun, hatte jedoch nicht viel Zeit. Hat mich stark an Berlin erinnert, als es noch geteilt war.

I am very sorry to see what has become of Famagusta. My name is Aili and I am from Sweden. I spent my best summer holiday, in 1971, in Hotel Asterias, Kennedy Avenue. I enjoyed the wonderful beach in front of the hotels. Famagusta with its wonderful beach was really a beautiful place. During my stay there, with my parents, I got a friend who was working at the hotel, Petros Nicolaos Protopapas, then 24. He was from a small greek village nearby and his father worked as a taxi driver. (He had a sister, Anthoula, who was then studying in London). If anyone knows anything about him or his fate Iwould be very grateful to know. Hey Tony Papparides. I lived at Koumipa Flats next to Harrods Stores on John F Kennedy Avenue, The guy always tried to chat up my Grandmother when she came over, he was always good for giving me and my mate cash back for the bottles we would collect on the beach. Great memories

I told my parents about the website. They saw the old indoor market place where they used to go and my dads old offfices and the house of his old boss. They were glad to seeit but sad

Fantastic photos of my birthplace, I was wondering if its possible to find out who took these and if there are any more. I'm specifically looking for photos that are slightly further south of the coast. Specifically John Kennedy Avenue !

Wonderful Photos,both my wife and I have just come back from North Cyprus. the first time back since 1971.We could see the flats where she used to live,from the beach.Iy brought tears to our eyes to see it now,and yet remember the good times we both had all those years ago

Dear Alexi, Yesterday we celebrated the championship with ANORTHOSIS and the municipality had an exhibition with a few of these photos. I asked my brother who is a professional to search the web as I was sure there would be more. Afew minutes ago he informed me that he found your web page.WHAT A SMALL WORLD!!!Best regards my friend.
