King Island fairy penguin - night landing

King Island, Tasmania, Australia

I think this is a baby penguin. The adult penguins land each night by riding through the surf after night fishing. When one them signals it is safe, hundreds of penguins walk onto and up the beach. As they progress up the beach they split up and go to their rookeries where they have left their families. They are a small species and if you remain quite still the penguins walk right next to your foot on their way to home.

This image was originally in colour however the light source was a red tinted torch in otherwise pitch black conditions. Also this image stretched my Nikon Coolpix 5000 beyond its limits. This camera is poor in low light, creating a great deal of noise. Converting it to grayscale gave a much better and clearer view of this beautiful bird. I wish I had my Canon 5D that night.
