Only 48 hours before I took this photograph, the water main pictured split releasing 7 million litres of water. Not only did the road cave in creating a swimming pool sized hole, but the water flooded the surrounding area reaching over knee deep. Some basment garages were completely filled drowning cars and motor bikes.
This water main is probably at least 100 years old. It is made of cast iron. Big cities with old suburbs have many such pieces of old infrastructure. Government hope that such engineering does not fail as the renewal costs are high.
