In much of Europe and North America, road salt is used to clear roads of snow and ice. While the physics of using salt on frozen water is simple, the environmental consequences of using road salt on the water tables and general ecology is become well understood. Salt is toxic in many circumstances. Better methods of clearing and designing road are urgently needed to prevent millions of tonnes of salt being spread on the roads of the northern hemisphere.
