9 May 09 - molten fountain

Sydney, Australia

_MG_7867-Edit.jpg

On a lovely day in the Sydney CBD today I walked down Martin Place and once again photographed rather ordinary fountains. These fountains are basically a concrete bowl with a single, small water spout which causes the bowl to overflow onto the ground. A very simple concept.

The light was shining at an a oblique angle today creating deep, strong shadows. I thought the darkness of the bowl, combined with sheen of the light on the surface of the water had possibilities for conversion into black and white.

This image, yet another of my experiments, is the result. It does not really fall into an easy category or group.

Instead of a grayscale conversion, I dramatically darkened the shadow area, dramatically lightened the highlights, increased the colour saturation and then applied some split toning to slightly colour the highlights and the dark areas differently.

The result to me looks more like molten steel like at a steel foundry. This non-descript fountain gained some powerful aspects. I hope this worked.
