Pont du Gard, Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Constructed almost 2000 years ago to carry water 30 miles (50 kms) from near Uzès to Nimes, the Pont du Gard is the highest aqueduct of the Roman world. Despite its name, the aqueduct actually spans the Gardon, a tributary of the Gard. It is some 390 metres long and almost 49 metres (160 feet) high.
