Some 28 years since I saw them live with the Thompson Twins at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (Irvine Auditorium), I got to see and shoot The English Beat. A swarming capacity crowd filed into Lost on Main in downtown Chico, California, on Jan. 22, 2010 for a sold-out concert by the still charming, danceable ska band that was of the most refreshing acts of the early-‘80s post-punk pop era. The crowd moved in sweaty unison — kind of a treat in mid-January — to front man Dave Wakeling and his septet as they delighted the gathered for more than two hours with songs such as "Save It For Later," "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Tenderness," "Tears of a Clown."
