Mungo National Park 2007

[Under construction, keep eyes peeled for more images!]

Mungo National Park is in Australia, near the border of the states of New South Wales and Victoria. For some perspective, it's about 1000km inland from Sydney. It is basically an area that use to be a lake during the last ice age, which has dried along with the rest of inland Australia since that time. Water and wind over thousands of years has left formations made of sand and clay, each a unique weathered object. The centerpiece is the 'Walls of China', made of these formations and partnered by mobile sand dunes. These unique dunes and formations stand isolated amongst hundreds of kilometres of chenopod shrublands - dry, treeless plains of saltbush and bluebush which only grow to knee height; and mallee woodlands - stunted multi-stemmed eucalypts that form dense patches, reaching only meagre heights (usually a few metres).

Mungo's a special place - I only spent a few days out there, but it was one of the most relaxing places I've been to. Not too many flies in September, and pleasant days made it pretty cool. If you love the arid zone, you'll love walking aimlessly around in Mungo - but don't get lost!
