"Moreno in Las Vegas"

Watsonville's Carina Moreno was expected to leave Wednesday for Las Vegas to spar with two of the bigger names in women's boxing in preparation for her own 10-round IBA world championship fight Jan. 21 in Louisiana against Wendy Rodriguez.
Moreno, 8-0, is planning to spar four times in four days against IBA and WIBA world flyweight champion Melinda Cooper (16-0), former WIBF world champion Elena "Baby Doll" Reid (17-3-5), and others at The Gym, training headquarters for the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
Moreno will fight Rodriguez (16-2-3) for the WBA light flyweight (108-pound) championship at the Coushatta Casino and Resort in Kinder, La. Both fighters are ranked No. 1 in the world by competing sanctioning bodies. Rodriguez is the reigning NABA champ and the former IFBA title-holder.
"I'd put Carina at about 90 percent right now, and she'll be 100 percent ready by the time we get back," said trainer Rick Noble, who was traveling to Las Vegas with Moreno. "The physical part is there now -- it's the mental part we're working on. We want to make sure she believes in herself. Fear of the unknown can make you hesitate, and that's what the rest of our preparation will be about."
