My parents sailed first from Gdynia, Poland, to Le Havre, France, from where the made their way to the port of La Rochelle. There they boarded the Orduņa, a ship of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, which was in service to South America and which took them to Cuba, via Liverpool, England, and Bermuda. In a memoir written when she was in her mid-70s, my mother recalled that even though she and my father were refugees with an uncertain future, they decided to treat the voyage as a holiday. This picture suggests that they managed to succeed.
