My Father's Life in Pictures (1904-1968)

My father, Maurice Teich, was born in 1904 in Czernowitz, Austro-Hungary (now Chernivtsy, Ukraine - see photos from my visit in 1992 at the bottom of this page). He lived in Vienna from about 1925 to 1938. He and my mother were married in Warsaw, left Europe to escape the Holocaust in late 1938, and lived several years in Cuba. My mother was able to enter the United States on an immigrant visa in 1940; my father followed her in 1941. They settled in Chicago, where I was born and lived there until the early 1960s. After a brief stay in South Florida, they moved to New York City, where my father died in 1968. This gallery, which I have created in honor of the centennial of his birth, is a chronicle of his life. The description under each picture provides more detail on the picture and its significance. Enjoyed very much your gallery of family pictures. I was born and spent my cildhood (including the WWII years) in Czernowitz. Many of the pictures in your gallery are very familiar to me. I have written and punlished a book about Jewish life in Czernowitz before, during and after WWII ("In the Vortex"). You are fortunate to have such numerous and beautiful pictures of your parents. I still remember that the name Teich came up in conversations between my parents (not sure if it was your family, since there ware other Teich families in the city). Thanks for sharing.

Much admiration from the Burg and Schlomiuk families for these wonderful pictures of the Teich family and of Czernowitz. We must continue being Jewish and never abandon our history. Israel is now more important than ever as anti-Semitism is again in vogue.

A very nice history and tribute, not too long (as albums often are) but long enough for plenty of detail. My father was also born in 1904 and lived a few years longer than yours. Life's history very similar, at the same time different, to mine...even the pictures could pass for my family's history...Father born 1910 Poland, moved to Montreal in 1927, started food business in 1928 with brothers...raised a family, visited Israel in 1966, died in !977. Keep the pictures alive...we certainly do live, through our collective pasts..

You've done a really wonderful thing here with these portraits of your family history. What a great glimpse of 20th century world events through another's eyes. Don't forget about archival paper/storage for those originals. Thanks for sharing, your narrative added much depth to the story.

This is a very touching gallery. As I read your comments on each photo I feel like I'm sitting in your living room flipping thru a photo album and hearing the stories that go along with each picture, and that's the best part. I love it when you get to hear stories that go along with photo's. This isn't a story that most people want to remember but it happened and is extremely sad. My sincere sympathy for what your family suffered. Thanks for sharing this here. Jim
