160828_114141_1439 Toward The Tomb (Sun 28 Aug 16 (1))

Via Dante Alighieri, Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italia

We were back on the road again after a mere two nights in Venezia. First stop of the day was Ravenna, the last capital of the Western Roman Empire. You wouldn't know it from the places that we visited but this city is on the Adriatic coast, about 3/4 of the way from Venice to San Marino.

We landed in the centre of town and were walked down to the main square, from which we were turned loose. We followed some signs toward some historical features that we never found. We did find the tomb of Dante, though, which can be seen here. And we found a rather exceptional patisserie in one of the backstreets.

As with a number of Italian cities I'm sure that there are jewels of art that could be unearthed in Ravenna had we had the time. However everyone came away feeling a tad underwhelmed from the stop. Unlike the previous destination (Venice) or the next one (San Marino), it's not a place that grabs you by the throat from your first glance at it.

It is, however, a place worth exploring if you have more than a few hours, and a chance to really research it first.
