160626_070827_0364 Intimidation... Fail (Sun 26 Jun 16)

Austinmer Beach, Illawarra, NSW

I'm a bit behind in both posting and commenting at the moment so I'll quickly whack this one up before hitting the sack, and catch up with everything else in due course.

Yesterday we had some howling winds and waves to match. Naturally, I didn't go out to shoot yesterday, sigh. Naturally, today both wind and waves had abated.

Nonetheless there were still some impressive enough breaks around. In this case a surfer stands on the edge of the Austinmer rock pool while the ocean blasts a warning in front of his face to stay out.

He ignored it, and had some pretty good rides when he did.

The ocean is of course currently plotting its revenge, as it always does.

Obviously I'm violating the rule of thirds pretty severely here, but I think that this is one of those cases where dead centre is warranted. (Particularly as it allowed me to line up both the surfer and the point where the waves were breaking.)

I like him in the middle, caught between the wall and the wave!

Dead center works well because it seems as though we are seeing what the surfer is viewing. Excellent timing. The composition with the ship is fantastic. V

I think the rule of 3rds can be broken when there is enough symmetry on either side of the subject as is the case here. There is a lot of mood in this shot. I see the anger in the sea and the determination in the surfer's stance. He is planning his attack. :) V

Who cares about the rules when there's a moment to capture a great shot! Love the surf here and your position to take the picture is perfect. *V*

salutations to both of you and everyone else ignoring the rules
