The gardens have a hot house for plants that need warmer climates, such as this Golden Barrel cactus. According to the nearby sign this one is estimated to be 70 to 80 years old. At maturity, these cacti can get up to a metre across.
If you ever find yourself in the desert with them, you can get water out of them by burning off the spikes, mashing up the tissue and squeezing the pulp. Send me a postcard if this information ends up saving your life someday.
