Iberia was the only foreign airline permitted to have a hub in the USA with B747 flights from Madrid connecting passengers to smaller Iberia aircraft based at MIA that flew to Central America destinations.

Due to increased security procedures requiring intransit passengers to have pre-arranged visas, the hub was shut down on September 28, 2004.
