2013 - the new Aeroterm cargo buildings where the Eastern Airlines Maintenance Base once stood for decades

Northeast Base, Miami International Airport, Florida

Eastern's former building #5A is visible on the far right side and is the only surviving former Eastern building east of the former Eastern hangar on the far left side. Building 5A is occupied by several divisions (accounting, contract administration, personnel, fire protection systems, safety, facilities, etc.) of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

These new buildings were constructed by Aeroterm for use by cargo airlines such as Centurion, Southern Air, Cielos, Atlas, Cathay and others. Unfortunately most of the aircraft are heavily loaded going out and require the length of runway 9/27 on the south side of the airport so they have to taxi across the entire airfield to get there. These airlines must have gotten a great break on their leases because they are surely burning a lot more very expensive fuel taxiing out across the entire airport, holding short of up to three different runways, to get to runway 9/27 when they formerly operated at the Aviation Department's Eastern U and Western U cargo buildings which are right next to runway 9/27.

This was a great trip down memory lane. I still work at MIA and remember you well. Used to be the locksmith and now Maintenance Superintendent. Would be great to hear from you and how you are doing.
