The Admiral's driver was a buddy of mine at the time and we went out on the town that night and fortunately didn't wreck the admiral's car.

Rear Admiral Smeder lived to be 94, passing away in 2009. This is his obituary:

Orvan R. Smeder, 94, died Aug 29, 2009, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Port St Lucie. He was born in Holcombe, Wis., and lived in the area since 1994, coming from Miami. He was a retired Rear Admiral in the Coast Guard with 38 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II. He commanded the 7th Coast Guard District and retired in 1973. Survivors include his sons, Ron Smeder of Oakton, Va., and Ren Smeder of Port St Lucie; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Smeder. Services: Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date. Arrangements are by Aycock Funeral Home, Jensen Beach.
