On July 10, 2005, Jimmy Franklin and Bobby Younkin were killed in a mid-air collision at the 15 Wing Base in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Two of the planes had crossed past each other when the third came up from underneath and smashed into one of the planes. The pilot in the third craft, Jim LeRoy, landed safely. Franklin, of Neosho, Mo., had been flying air shows for more than 30 years. On July 28, 2007, Jim LeRoy perished in a crash at the Dayton Air Show, Ohio. RIP Mr. LeRoy.

I consider myself very fortunate to have met Jimmy, the 1st time was at Brown Field, in SanDiego, cal, at the 1988 International Air Show. I was just getting started building my RV-4 and he hangered his plane(then I believe it was an R-1340) In the hanger next to mine which was donated by our FBO at the time.Felt privliedged to have him come and look at my work.It fasinated him to see a Mazda rotary engine in an RV-4.Loved his show,He was a pilot to wish to be 1/2 as good as he was...still is it me. We saw Jimmy at Belle Chase in 2000. He was featured in all the TV ads and not being familiar with him I figured "Yeah, right!". I expected to see a few low-and-slow passes and maybe a wing wiggle. Well, was I impressed! No disrespect meant, but he was the classic "Flyin' fool". If it could be done, he was doing it. I was talking to a fellow from the Confederate Air Force (RIP) who said "We all know he is going to kill himself one day." My response was "Can you think of any other way he would like to go?" He agreed I was probably right. Jimmy Franklin was surely one of a kind and will be missed.

i have a photo of myself and jimmy taken at an air show in durango,colo. about ten years ago,i am sorry about losing him . jim welch

I relaized that I had watched Jimmy Franklin perform at an airshow in New Brunswick several years ago. It was the best flying I have ever seen, and I really respected that. To Mr. Franklin's family I am truly sorry for your loss, but I thank God for putting him here on earth a short time to demonstrate what courage is for the rest of us. Rest in Peace Jimmy.
