Pattern 1874, Second Type, McKeever Cartridge Box, manufactured about 1876-1878.
Marked U.S. Watervliet Arsenal (New York). This belt-carried ammo carrier was used to contain .45-70 cartridges for a U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle or carbine, common during the Indian Wars.
Shown also is a U.S. Model 1879 combination screwdriver (Second Type)for the Springfield. The McKeever box has an inside pouch for carrying such a tool, although an earlier Model 1876 version.
