Red Wolf

Awendaw SC

Larger than a Coyote, and smaller than a Gray Wolf, the Red Wolf was near extinction in 1970
with an approximate 100 surviving in the wild. With careful conservation and breeding
programs (catch, breed and release) the wild population is thought to be at around 2500
animals. This wolf is one of a pair being held for observation and education at the Sewee
Center near Charleston SC. (Pairs usually mate for life. Breeding occurs in the late winter
months. Most pups are eventually relocated to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in NC.)

In their large enclosure, the wolves tend to watch from cover of tree trunks, and often are
seen 'peeking' around the edge of the trunks making them quite hard to spot in the shadows.
This male gave me a few seconds in the alert pose. In the wild, there is little doubt they
see you before you see them. :-)
