My Band of Brothers

Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam

Best viewed in Original size

Some, but not all, of my Band of Brothers. As a platoon commander on my first tour
I had about 26 or so warriors, and we normally put together patrol groups such
as this of a dozen or so for any particular mission. For major deployments,
we would all be in the field. This, if I remember, is a patrol ready for helicopter
collection from the LZ behind.

With my arm around his neck, it seems I am preparing to kiss my machine gunner.
Quite unlikely! :-) I remember before I was commissioned, I was told I should know my soldiers
as their mothers did, and love them just as much. I tried to fill this role.

A photo from what seems like a life time ago, but very vivid to this day. V

All young men. A sobering picture. Hope they all made it.

Maybe you need to gather together again?
This is a wonderful picture under sad circumstances but still
togetherness is palpable here.
Love the title...

Comradeship and humour.
Important qualities which overcome adversity.

If any photo shows a group of guys comfortable with each other and their leader, this does. It has become one of my favorite Vietnam War photos. Thanks for sharing it.

Colin, you nailed the basis of leadership ... know your men, treat them with respect and all the rest will flow therefrom. It's what makes military life so special ... I've often explained (or tried to) the fraternal bond that lasts long years after.
