Prague and Surrounding

Prague is really a beautiful city. End of the story. Well, not too fast. Here is a short, very short blurb about the city nonetheless:

Prague has a long historical roots; the city has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1,100 years. It was also the seat of two Holy Roman emperors and as such it was capital the Holy Roman Empire for a period. The number of elaborately decorated churches in that city shows it. The city flourished during the 14th century reign of Charles IV, the king of Bohemia, one of the emperors and the more famous emperor. His statue stands at the entrance of the bridge over the Vlatava River from the old town that bears his name. Prague was one of the few European cities relatively untouched during the World Wars, allowing its historic architecture to stay intact.

I was set out to take pictures at night. I was expecting to see more of city light and I was first disappointed that the famous old town square was fairly dark at dusk. Only vendors and restaurants had their lights on. As it turned out, the city turned on the light right after the clock stroke 9:00PM (in May) after the "show" at the clock tower. It became alive then...

A week before we left I started monitoring the weather over there and that didn't give a warm and cozy feeling. It practically rained on a daily basis during that week. We stayed 4 days in that city and out of the 4 we ended up seeing the sun here and there. Plus, it didn't rain that much. We lucked out!

Photographic tidbits:
This time around we visited several historical European cities. With that in mind, I put more emphasis on the wider end of the focal length range for my lens selection. As such I took my 17mm tilt-and-shift lens with me on this trip, which I used quite a bit more for indoor shots. The first "image" is actually a sub-gallery of Kutna Hora and Karlstejn, two nearby cities we visited on this trip.

Thank you for visiting. Please feel free to leave comments right here on the gallery if you feel like it.
