Colorful aurora borealis 2

This is the second session of aurora borealis in my life. The first session, also in Iceland, was more visible to the naked eyes. The green colors were very intense, the light show moved across the sky, like a drape and it danced up and down. Very enjoyable to watch but the colors were pretty much green. The activities were rated at 5 back then.

This time around the green colors were also visible and bright but the light show didn't move much. But the other colors, the seldom seen colors, such as red, blue and purple were captured more by the camera than can be seen by the naked eyes. Of course, the longish exposure time plays a role in displaying that.

The solar storm that created the light show that night was major one from what we heard and read in the news. It was visible also to the regions of moderate latitude. We consider ourselves very lucky to witness and capture this wonder. The activities were rated at 9, the highest rating by the Icelandic Meteorological Institute. Wow!

Hi Yiannis,
That particular camera can handle high ISO extremely well. The aperture of that lens is f/4.0; so, I figured, I could afford to stop down 1-stop from there for more extended depth-of-field and for better lens rendition. I didn't see any ill effect bumping up the ISO to accommodate that. With that said, even at wide open aperture, the sharpness of that lens is simply incredible. Thanks!
