Bodie - A Ghost Town

Bodie is a mining ghost town in northeastern California, near Nevada. The remaining structures represent about only five percent of the buildings it contained during its heyday around 1880. Exposed to the elements, the remaining structures are slowly but surely decaying.

During the heyday around 1880, Bodie boasted a population of about ten thousand, complete with a "China Town" in the northern part of the town. Bodie was known as the sin city of the time where lawlessness contolled. Killings occurred on a regular basis, sometimes becoming almost daily events. Robberies, stage holdups and street fights provided variety, and the town's 65 saloons offered many opportunities for relaxation after had days of work in the mines. One little girl, whose family was taking her to this remote and infamous town, wrote in her diary: " Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie". Bodie is exactly the setting and ambiance I imagine and see in typical western movies but Bodie is for real or at least it was for real...

Ray Soemarsono, a fellow photographer from Southern California, also displays a gallery of this ghost town very appropriately in black and white. You can visit his excellent gallery here: http://www.pbase.com/zeroscan/bodie
