San Diego Maritime Museum

There are several ships moored at the base of Broadway in downtown San Diego, including the Star of India (wide shot) and the Rose, also known as the Surprise, the ship used in the film Master and Commander. The Star of India was constructed on the Isle of Man in November 1863 and was used to transport immigrants to the New Zealand. She was sold to Americans in 1898. The submarine is the B-39, a Russian Foxtrot class sub. The ship is powered by diesel-electric engines and was commissioned in 1974. The sub carried a crew of 78 and could dive to 985 feet.
