No one knows exactly why Machu Picchu was built. It is known that the Spaniards never made it this far, because it's still standing. The only skeletons found here have been those of women and children, so one theory is that this is a sanctuary where women and children were sent when the men were off fighting.
MachuPicchuRoad.jpg
This is the road the buses to and from Machu Picchu use. It's only about 1.5 buses wide and there are some close calls when a bus going up meets a bus coming down!
MachuPicchuGlimpse.jpg
Here is the first glimpse I had of Machu Picchu from the bus going up.

MachuPicchuWall.jpg
The Incas were amazing stone workers. This is a wall they built using no mortar. They only built with this level of skill on important buildings like temples and palaces. Regular houses were built using mortar between the stones.
MachuSunTemple
This is the sun temple, under it is an earth temple.

You can see here that this was clearly not an important building, the walls are rows of rocks filled with mortar.

MachiPicchuCaterpillar.jpg
I found a little caterpillar on my hike up to the top of Machu Picchu. I think it was hiding from the llamas.
MachiPicchuCondor.jpg
You have to use your imagination for this one, but if you can see the rock on the ground as the body and the two rocks going up at angles as wings, this is a condor.
MachiPicchuIncaTrail.jpg
Here is where the Inca trail comes into Machi Picchu.
MachiPicchuLlamas.jpg
There are 11 llamas that live in Machu Picchu.
MachuPicchuLittleLlama.jpg
5 were brought here and 6 were born here.
MachiPicchuLlamas2.jpg
They like to trap the poor tourists wandering around by themselves.
MachiPicchuLlamas4.jpg
I was blocked in by llamas for about 5 minutes, while one chewed on my shirt.
