The Ancient Judean City of Beit Guvrin / Maresha
was destroyed by Sennacherib in 701 B.C. and became
Eleutheropolis (“City of the Free”) in the Late Roman
period (200 A.D.). Its magnificent and complex cave
system covers a large area in historical Judea, in the
Lachish district south of Jerusalem.
The cave system encompasses “bell-caves” used as
quarries for lime stone, burial caves and columbarium
caves for the cultivation of pigeons.
This archeological site is indeed one of the unique
treasures of modern Israeli archeology.
