Size Does Matter

These images of one of my favorite Chinese Posters illustrate the Quality Difference in Sensor Size and Resolution of Digital Cameras. The same poster was photographed using a Canon G5 p/s, a Canon 20D DSLR, a Canon 5D DSLR and a BetterLight Super 8K Digitial Scan Back. A Leica 60mm F:2.8 Macro Elamrit R was used on the 20D and 5D at F:9.5 using studio strobes for illumination, and a Nikon 210mm F:5.6 Apo-EL-Nikkor was used on a Plaubel 4x5 view camera with Quartz Lighting for the BetterLight images.

I Posted Full Size images of the G5, 20D and 5D files after doing some PS adjustments as I normally do for printing, and reduced a BetterLight Scan to the same apprximate size as the 5D to show quality difference even when reducing file size. The Final 2 Photographs are 100% Center and Corner Crops of a Full Size BetterLight image to show maximum image quality resolution, these are Crops because I didn't want to post a 200 meg image which is what the BetterLight outputs at 100% resolution.

The poster measures approximatly 20 inches x 30 inches (500mm x 760mm), Select the ORIGINAL size of each image to determine quality. Suggest looking at the halftone dots of the center section of the image, and compare the quality of the Chinese figure in the oval in the lower left corner of each image. On the original the oval measures 5/8 inch (16mm) top to bottom, to give you an idea of the resolution of each digital camera system.
