Mary attended the annual meeting of the International Continence Society in October 2014 and I came along. We stayed in a great hotel, the Windsor Copa, a block from the famous Copacabana Beach. We took 3 tours before the meeting. The first tour was in Tijuca National Park. We hiked up a steep trail to Pedra Bonita. The a view of Pedra Gavea and the coast below is spectacular. On the way back down We saw a Toucan and some very playful Capuchin monkeys. Then we stopped at the Chinese View and got our first glimpse of the iconic landmarks of Rio, Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf. Our second tour took us back to Tijuca National Park where we went to a waterfall and then on to the Christ the Redeemer statue where the view was hidden by clouds below us. The tour concluded in the Lapa neighborhood where we went down the Escadaria Selaron and then feasted on a late lunch in a Portuguese restaurant. Our third tour was a walk through the largest favela in the city. While Mary was attending ICS sessions, I visited Ipanema Beach, Sugarloaf, Urca and a convent in the old city. Mary was able to join me for my second visit to Sugarloaf on a very clear day. Sugarloaf has to rank as one of the most beautiful urban vistas in the world. We visited some churches in the old city before our departure from the Cidade Maravilhosa.
