On 6th June 2007 Oman was hit by a tropical Cyclone Gonu. The Cyclone hit severely the Sharqiya Region and Muscat Governorate. Many Cities and villages were severely damaged due to the Cyclone. The Metrology department estimated the wind speeds in access of 200 Km/h in some areas. The highest rain fall in Oman history was also recorded during this Cyclone with over 800mm.
In these pictures I take you through some of the damages that occurred in Muscat area. Some of the roads were completely destroyed like the road between Wadi Adai and AL-Amerat. Areas like Qurum, Al Ghubra, AL Ansab, AL Hail were completely flooded with water and many people got affected with the water which went inside their houses and destroyed all their belongings. Unfortunately I couldn’t cover the relief part as I was fully involved indirectly through my work in trying to bring bank the GSM network back to service.
The government has estimated the damages that were caused by the cyclone Gonu to be in the range of 3.2 to 3.8 Billion US Dollars. Huge efforts are being carried out by the government, private sector and the public to bring life back to normal and great achievement has been achieved so far.
Unreal, it looks like most of the damage was caused by wadi's being over-topped by massive amounts of water run-off. I saw something similar, but on a much smaller scale when I lived in Oman in the 80's and that was scary enough.
