Catching the wave crashing into the shore just at that moment seems to amplify the sense of isolation.
(Of course in reality he's probably just enjoying the sights and sounds of the seaside and while seemingly alone, is far from lonely. But what the hey, the image still works perfectly for the theme. I've done that in a couple of mine...)
