Firefighters in Woonsocket and over a dozen surrounding towns battled a six alarm fire in an abandoned mill in the Seville Dye Company in the Fairmount section of the city. Woonsocket jakes had their hands full from the begining as the first arriving units reported heavy smoke showing from the old mill. The fire quickly escalated to an equivalent of six alarms. Members were unable to gain good access to the rear of the building due to location, and the fire fed on accumulated goods that had been in the building for years. Some of the buildings contents that were burning were considered hazardous, and police and firefighters evacuated residents of the nearby neighborhoods so they wouldn't breathe the contaminated smoke that was hanging low in the surrounding streets. After battling the fire for most of the afternoon, Woonsocket jakes finally seemed to gain the upper hand in controlling the fire. Fire crews remained on scene throughout the night patrolling for hotspots. The fire is considered suspicious, and is under investigation by the Woonsocket FD as well as the State Fire Marshal. |
