An early morning fire in the quiet town of Woodstock CT leveled three buildings and killed a large number of livestock that were bedded down in one of those buildings. At approximately 05:30 hrs. on Saturday morning, March 26th, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Dispatch fielded a call from a passerby who reported there were several buildings on fire at 124 Redhead Hill Road in the Muddy Brook section of Woodstock. The reporting party also stated that one of the buildings had already burned to the ground. QV Dispatch alerted all Woodstock fire companies, who immediately responded to the scene. As first due Muddy Brook firefighters arrived on scene, they found that fire had completely consumed an unoccupied farmhouse and shed at the location, and a very large, newly renovated barn was fully involved in fire. There were reported to be about 45 sheep, chickens, goats, and rabbits inside the blazing barn, but there was no way to reach the doomed animals and all perished in the fire. Due to the lack of fire hydrants near the scene of the fire, Muddy Brook fire officials had to establish and supply a tanker shuttle operation to the scene of the fire. Mutual aid for tankers was summonsed from several departments, including three from Southern Worcester County in Massachusetts. Those firefighters providing assistance to the Muddy Brook department at the scene were from the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, the Bungay FD, the Eastford FD, the Community Fire Company and the Quinebaug VFD. Responding Massachusetts fire departments were from Dudley, Webster, and Southbridge. The cause of the early morning fire was investigated by the Woodstock Fire Marshal with assistance from the State Fire Marshals Office, and remains undetermined at this time. No injuries were reported. |
