At approximately 05:30 hrs. on Saturday July 5th, Webster firefighters responded to a fire in a 3-story woodframe apartment house that had burned about a year earlier, displacing three families and killing one family's dog. The building was vacant at the time of this fire, and was heavily involved upon the arrival of the Webster FD. Due to the exposure problems, Chief Brian Hickey opted to protect the exposures on either side and initiate an aggressive exterior attack of the vacant building. Both exposures were occupied, but were evacuated by Webster Police prior to the fire department's arrival. The fire did ignite the siding of the "B" side exposure, but the fire did not extend into that dwelling. Webster received mutual aid from the Dudley, Oxford, and Southbridge fire departments as well as a Thompson CT fire company. |
