Just after 2 AM on June 4th, Webster firefighters responded to a working fire in a two-story wood frame apartment house located at 54 Negus Street. The fire was spotted by an alert Webster police officer during routine patrol. The apartment house had been vacant for some time, and has had a significant fire in the past. One firefighter was injured (an apparent heart attack), and had to be removed from the roof using the stokes basket over ground ladders. The aerial tower that brought him to the roof became inoperable, stranding him on the roof when he was injured. He was transported to UMASS Hospital in Worcester where he was stabilized. Today, he's resting comfortably at home and is doing well. The cause of the fire is suspect, and is being investigated by the Webster FD and PD, along with the State Fire Marshals Office. |
