At approximately 22:15 hrs. on Tuesday May 2nd, members of the Webster Fire Department responded to a reported fire in a vacant dwelling located at 34 East Main Street. Webster police arrived on the scene first and relayed to firefighters that they had a working fire in the building, with heavy fire showing at the rear of the vacant three-story apartment house. A 2nd alarm was ordered struck while Webster Engine 3 was enroute to the scene. Upon arrival, first due Webster jakes attempted to knock down the heavy fire condition at the rear of the building with a blitz line, while other members hand-jacked a 4" supply line to the closest hydrant. Webster Fire Chief Brian Hickey arrived on scene and assumed command, striking a third alarm to bring in more personnel and equipment to battle the rapidly spreading fire. Several other nearby occupied structures were threatened by flames in the early stages of the firefight. As the fire in the rear of the building was brought under control, crews gathered in front of the vacant to initiate an interior attack of the fire on all floors. All firefighters on scene did a commendable job chasing down this advance fire on all floors of the structure. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. No injuries were reported. Firefighters from Dudley, Southbridge, Oxford, Douglas, and Quinebaug CT assisted Webster firefighters at the scene. |
