At approximately 13:30 hrs. on Friday June 24th, members from five Thompson fire companies responded to a report of a house fire located at 148 Jezierski Road. As firefighters made their way to the scene, they immediately knew they would be going to work on arrival. A large column of black smoke was rising in the brilliant blue afternoon sky, and it could be seen for miles. First due firefighters were greeted with heavy fire and smoke showing from a two-story wood frame dwelling on the corner of Jezierski and Linehouse Roads. The location is void of any fire hydrants or a municipal water system, and water had to be shuttled in by tankers. Mutual aid had to be called to produce an adequate, uninterrupted water source. The fire had gained considerable headway prior to the arrival of the fire department, and crews were forced to remain outside the structure and knock down the heavy fire from their exterior positions. Soon, the roof collapsed into the second floor of the dwelling, putting to rest any thoughts of entering the house to attack this fire. A second collapse several minutes later brought down half of the structure into the back yard. The occupant of the house was not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were sustained by any of the first responders. Fire departments responding to the early afternoon fire were the Community Fire Company, the Quinebaug VFD, as well as the Thompson Hill, East Thompson, and West Thompson fire departments. Mutual aid assistance was received from the East Putnam FD, the Muddy Brook FD, Woodstock VFD, as well as the Dudley FD, Webster FD, and Oxford FD from Massachusetts. The cause of the fire is under investigation. |
