At 02:40 hours, all Thompson fire companies were alerted to a reported structure fire located at 274 Riverside Drive in West Thompson by Quinebaug Valley Dispatch. When first due West Thompson firefighters arrived, they found the vacant Del Rio Restaurant already totally engulfed in flames. A second alarm was struck to bring enough resources to the scene to battle the fire in the unoccupied 100x50 foot wooden structure. Eventually, eleven departments responded to the scene to assist in extinguishing the blaze. Those departments that responded and assisted the West Thompson FD were the Community Fire Company, East Thompson and Thompson Hill FD, and the Quinebaug VFD. Also responding were the East Putnam, Woodstock, and Muddy Brook fire departments, as well as the Dudley FD from Massachusetts. Firefighters were initially hampered in their approach of the buiding, as live electrical wires were burned off the building and landed across the only road into the fire location, Riverside Drive. Water also had to be trucked into the scene until drafting sites could be established in somewhat close proximity to the scene. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire according to Thompson Fire Marshal Ricky Hayes, and there were no injuries suffered on the fireground during the suppression operation. The Thompson Fire Marshal joined forces with the Connecticut State Fire Marshals Office to attempt to determine a cause for the early morning fire. After the investigation, they were unable to determine a clear cause for the blaze. The building has been declared a total loss. |
