| At approximately 3:40 PM on April 7th, Southbridge firefighters responded to a fire on the first floor of an occupied three story taxpayer on Main St. behind the fire station. At the time the fire was reported, the on-duty crew was out committed to back to back ambulance calls. A second alarm had to be struck to bring in firefighters to respond to the fire. Upon arrival, first due firefighters had a good working fire in a first floor business, and a very heavy smoke condition was filling the upper two floors of apartments. A third alarm was struck shortly after arrival, and about 40 apartment doors had to be forced by firefighters who performed primary searches. One resident was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Southbridge jakes made a great stop, as the fire never extended beyond the floor of origin. |
