In the early morning hours of February 18th, Southbridge firefighters responded to a fire in a three story wood frame occupied multiple dwelling at 24 North Street. As luck would have it, a dog in the first floor apartment started barking frantically which alerted his owners to the fire quickly spreading throughout their apartment. About the same time, a Southbridge police officer rolled up on the fire and reported it to his dispatcher, who in turn called the fire department. The officer then went in to the upper two floors and evacuated all the residents remaining in the building. The smoke condition got so bad during the evacuation that the occupants from the third floor and the police officer had difficulty seeing the stairway due to dense smoke. When the first due engine and truck arrived approximately two minutes after notification, the entire front of the building, floor 1 to floor 3, was totally involved in fire. A third alarm was struck by Capt. Jeff Mathieu, which brought all off duty firefighters to the scene as well as a small on-call force. When Fire Chief Richard Ciesla Jr. arrived on scene, he essentially struck a fourth alarm, calling mutual aid in from the communities of Sturbridge, Webster (Rescue), Charlton, Dudley, and Oxford. The fire was brought under control in about 90 Minutes. The dog, who alerted his owners of the fire, as well as two cats perished in the fire. |
